Roosters of the East Cape of the Baja Peninsula
In late May, when the ocean currents push warm, tropical water up the east cap of the Sea of Cortez, the Roosters follow. A nine weight fly rod with a killer reel and 450 yards (yes, 450!) of backing and you are ready to site fish to Roosters up to 65 pounds from the beach. Yes, the beach. That white sand with crystal clear water place. As Jake says, "Next Level."
"A rude dude
The real deal
Lean and mean
Cocked, locked and ready to rock
Rough tough and hard to bluff!"
-- George Carlin
There are few beaches in this world that you can sight and cast to a 20, 40 or 60 pound Rooster fish that is on the make. You don't know whether you are in the moment and on the edge or dodging a bullet and the experience of a good shot will leave your heart pounding. Check out the DVD "Running Down the Man" at your local flyshop or order a copy from www.scottflyrods.com. It was shot at and around Pappagallo. The season for sight casting to roosters is April through July with May and June being peak.
